‘BASICALLY, JOHNNY MOPED’ FILM

A documentary film telling "the story of punk rock’s great lost legend" Johnny Moped, titled ‘Basically, Johnny Moped’, is now up for pre-order.

For all the info and a movie trailer, see below.

www.basicallyjohnnymoped.com

BASICALLY, JOHNNY MOPED
Directed by Fred Burns
Executive Producers: Christopher Hird and Martin Kelly
Associate Producer: Paul Kelly

Formed in 1974 by a group of school friends from Croydon, Johnny Moped were the band fronted by, and named after the enigmatic Paul Halford (aka Johnny Moped). By 1977 the group found themselves at the heart of the burgeoning punk scene in London and for a brief moment even looked like contenders.

‘When I first met Johnny,’ Captain Sensible – the band’s original guitarist – says, ‘I just thought, this guy is a bundle of frenetic energy; he’s a megastar waiting to happen.’

By 1978, after an intense year of activity, the band were completing their first record with Chiswick Records and things were looking promising. But whilst adding the final touches to the record, Johnny – who had recently married – started to become evasive as his mother-in-law exerted pressure on him to leave the group. “In the end we had to basically kidnap him every time we had a gig or needed to record!’ said Dave Berk, the bands drummer.

Despite being able to count both Chrissie Hynde and Captain Sensible as past members, success was not to come their way and Johnny Moped are now largely forgotten – punk rock’s great lost band!

Their story is however a fascinating one that, along with some of the era’s most innovative music deserves to be heard

There will be a UK premiere screening of ‘Basically, Johnny Moped’ on Thursday 17th September at London Koko, with a live performance from Johnny Moped and Captain Sensible.

Tickets are £17 and are on sale now.

EASTEND BABYLON-DVD IS IN OUR STORE! ORDER NOW!

BUY THE COCKNEY REJECTS EASTEND BABYLON DVD-RIGHT HERE ON OUR SITE!

East End Babylon – The Story Of The Cockney Rejects DVD

£12.00

Formed in the turbulence of late Seventies East London as an answer to the dominant art school punk, Cockney Rejects cornered their patch with their brand of terrace singalong classics and a white hot live set. ""East End Babylon"" is the no-holds-barred and acclaimed documentary that tells their story through interviews, rare archive footage of the band and their East End roots plus dynamic live footage.

The Rejects were fiercely working class, the band eschewed the political ramblings of punk’s first wave and sang about their own circumstances. Joe Strummer famously said that, ""The Rejects were the real deal"", whilst Morrissey reckoned ""Jeff Turner was obviously singing to avoid killing someone.""

Signed by EMI after playing four local gigs (less than The Pistols!) they found themselves playing sell out tours across the UK and seeing their debut album storm the charts. Top of the Pops appearances followed, which became the stuff of legend as the band ran amok, finally being banned from the show.

"East End Babylon" was directed by Richard England (executive producer of award-winning Dr. Feelgood documentary "Oil City Confidential") and edited by Henry Stein (who recently edited the Led Zeppelin concert film "Celebration Day"). ‘East End Babylon’ receives a 9/10 review in issue 13 of Vive Le Rock, with editor Eugene Butcher calling it an "essential rock ‘n’ roll documentary".

As well as the film itself, the DVD release includes over 90 minutes of outstanding bonus extras including unseen music and interview footage. "East End Babylon" was featured in the Sundance Film Festival in London on 26th April 2013 and nominated for the BAFTA’s longlist.

Thee Spivs are putting on a fun-packed all dayer show that they’re calling Spiv Fest to celebrate the release of their new album  The Crowds and The Sounds (Damaged Goods 24 June) featuring friends and fans and a lot of good old rock’n’roll!

With the new album they’ve honed their canny blend of trad punk, garage punk, post punk, new wave, classic English rock’n’roll and pub rock to create a magnifi- cently varied album. Dare we say, these young men have matured, with Ben Edge proving his worth as an accomplished songwriter. Drawing from a more diverse array of influences, Thee Spivs have lapped up and reimagined sounds from bands such as The Television Personalities, The Ramones and early Wire.

LIVE
29 June – Album launch party at The Half Moon in Putney – http://www.halfmoon.co.uk/event/736
17 August – The Lexington – London – Spiv Fest

The new album is a natural progression from their critically acclaimed debut ‘Taped Up’ (which landed the band an early Mojo Rising feature and a Guardian New Band of the Day piece as well as praise in The Sunday Times and Artrocker) and last year’s ‘Black and White Memories’ (with reviews including Q, Uncut and BBC). ‘The Crowds and The Sounds’ is instantly more melodic and you can see additional influences from the very British qualities of The Kinks. The songs are slowed down and slightly longer in length, with a lot more thought and work in to each one than the furiously fast, punchy numbers from their early records.

The first single from the album is called "Straight Out Of Art School" and it’s backed with an exclusive b-side called ‘HERE AND NOW’, Thee Spivs will also be releasing a limited German 7” on SQUOOGE records which is another track from the new album called ‘Mickey Pearce Walked Away’.

DEMON VINYL REISSUES

Vinyl-only label, Demon Records release rare reissues and original releases
of Foghat, Jim Croce, Sugar, Ian McCulloch, The Beat, Deacon Blue, Marc
Bolan and Saxon

This summer, Demon Records return with audiophile-friendly heavyweight vinyl
releases from a broad spectrum of influential and adored artists across
several genres. The rare and incredibly limited runs of releases are only
available once, and represent a number of Demon’s illustrious catalogue
artists plus exciting new third party projects with What Records. The
releases are as follows:

Artist: Foghat

Title: ‘Fool For The City’

Cat No: DEMREC08

Quantity: Strictly limited to 500 copies

Info: Reissued for the first time since it’s astounding initial release
which earned a double platinum certification for over two million copies
sold. The breakthrough album is a rock classic which features the huge "Slow
Ride" amongst a killer batch of often criminally overlooked classics.

Artist: Sugar

Title: ‘Beaster’

Cat No: EDLP1002

Quantity: Strictly limited to 500 copies

Info: Recorded at the same sessions that produced their classic debut Cooper
Blue, this sophomore collection was very much the dark flipside to the
album’s widescreen powerpop. Retaining his gift for great hooks, Beaster saw
frontman and songwriter Bob Mould screaming confessional and rawly emotional
lyrics against a raging torrent of noisy guitars. Ably backed by the by
David Barbe and Malcolm Travis the songs combine a wall of sound dynamics
with powerfully religious imagery and carefully layered arrangements. Sugar
were vindicated in issuing such an extreme sonic statement but the album
entered the UK charts at number three and cemented their reputation as
uncompromising but brilliantly creative outfit.

Artist: Saxon

Title: ‘Dogs Of War’ – 12" Picture Disc

Cat No: DEMREC07

Quantity: Strictly limited to 750 copies

Info: Recorded on Boston England, the twelfth studio album "Dogs Of War",
orginially released in 1995, was Saxon’s third for Virgin Germany and was
the last album to feature guitarist Graham Oliver. The 10-track epic is a
move in the heavier direction for Saxon and features rock powerhouses
‘Burning Wheels’ and ‘Demolition Alley’ with monstrous artwork and trademark
pounding riffs.

Artist: Ian McCulloch (What Records Exclusive & Demon)

Album Title: ‘Holy Ghosts’ – Triple transparent yellow vinyl

Cat No: DEMREC15

Quantity: Strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide

Info: Celebrating the releases of McCulloch’s new double album package Holy
Ghosts – Demon Records are releasing an exclusive triple pack of the album
featuring 15 brand new orchestral reworkings of classic Echo & The Bunnymen
produced and mixed by Youth along with the new studio album.

THE CRUNCH-PUNK SUPERGROUP-LIVE TOMORROW!

 CLASH DRUMMER-SHAM/LORDS BASS-COCKNEY REJECTS GUITAR-ALL STAR NEW BAND THE CRUNCH-LIVE TUESDAY5TH JUNE!

*** All-star power-pop rockers The Crunch make their UK live debut with an intimate, one-off show at London’s Relentless Garage on June 5th ***

Sulo – vocals     Mick Geggus – guitar     Dave Tregunna  – bass     Terry Chimes – drums

All-star power-pop rock act The Crunch have announced they’ll make their UK live debut on June 5th, with an intimate show upstairs at London’s Relentless Garage.  This one-off date will be the only chance to catch the band in action on these shores before they embark on a full tour in October.

Formed late last year, The Crunch combines the talents of four renowned rock and punk players.  Fronting the operation is Sulo Karlsson, the honey-n-gravel voice of Swedish blues-rockers Diamond Dogs.  On bass is punk rock prime mover, noted for his part in Sham 69 and Lords of the New Church, Dave Tregunna, and on guitar Mick Geggus – whose crucial role in creating the Oi sound with the Cockney Rejects was recently documented in acclaimed biopic ‘East End Babylon’.  Completing the quartet is original Clash drummer Terry Chimes, whose equally notable later work includes stints with Black Sabbath and Hanoi Rocks.

The Crunch’s past credits are undeniably impressive, but even more inspiring is the music this iconic foursome have been creating since joining forces.  Debut 7” ‘Down By The Border’ will offer a first taste of their power-pop-with-punk-bite when it is released on June 3rd via Legal Records, and the group stress this is only the beginning.  Neither a supergroup or a side-project, The Crunch is a fully committed band and issues its first album in October, when a UK tour is planned to support the release.

Before then music fans have a first chance to hear the new material – plus a few classics from the members’ back catalogues – at;
