GAYE BLACKS BLACK XMAS EXHIBITION

Signal Gallery

Signal Gallery

Black Xmas

A thoroughly nasty ‘festive’ show
curated by Gaye Black (aka Gaye Advert)

Private view 29th November 6 – 9pm

Open 30th November – 21st December

Don’t expect jingling bells, carol singers or a Santa’s Grotto this year at Signal for Christmas. After a year of jubilees and twinkling medals, we really felt the need to redress the balance with something not festive at all. So we asked our resident Punk legend Gaye Black (aka Gaye Advert), who’s always in favour of a good dollop of the dark side, to curate this one with malice.

All the artists in the show have been given strict instructions not to have a good time and have been chosen for their penchant for the quirky anyway. Expect the worst!
Ben Edge – front man from the neo-punk band ‘Thee Spivs’ and damn talented artsist.
Brian P – Extraordinary artist from Australia.
Carrie Reichardt – Renegade potter and mosaic artist.
Dale Grimshaw – dark & moody gallery/street artist with a punk past.
Ella Guru – a founding member of Stuckist movement.
Espira – Purveyor of edgy/controversial images.
Gaye Black – The legend herself! Many shows this year, including USA, London and Berlin.
Jason Atomic – Cartoon artist from London and much more.
Jowe Head – Punk legend from the influential 70s punk band the Swell Maps.
KEELERTORNERO – collaborative artists producing surreal collage and paintings.
MyDogSighs – Known for painting on crushed tin cans and more.
Rufus Dayglo – comic book artist of Tank Girl fame.
Sophie Lo – Parisian artist/designer – iconic poster & album design.
Tom Spencer – Tattoo stained glass artist and bass player in a number of noted bands including the Loyalties
Wreckage International – From Mutoid Waste.

At the private view, the fabulous steam punk band ‘The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothingwill be performing a politely riotous set.
We are also delighted to have the unbelieveably celebby West End nightclub ‘Movida’ providing the bar.

VIBRATORS plus BERMONDSEY JOYRIDERS SAT

Punk-blooze trio THE BERMONDSEY JOYRIDERS are back on the London stage this Saturday, when their slide-infused ‘77 stylings will be warming up Tufnell Park’s Boston Music Room for punk icons The Vibrators.

An ideal and inspired match, The ‘Joyriders share some heritage with the headliners (frontman Gary Lammin, bassist Martin Stacey and drummer Chris Musto respectively cut their teeth in Strummer proteges Little Roosters, Chelsea and Johnny Thunders‘ Oddballs), but possess a distinctive style of showmanship that’s sure to keep punters on their toes.

The veteran trio have blended the punk prototype with slide-blues sounds and a Kinks-esque vein of very British social commentary, fully realizing their bold vision on May’s second album ‘Noise & Revolution’.  An ambitious concept piece featuring spoken word narration from MC5 manager and performance poet John Sinclair, the record won considerable critical acclaim upon release and a cult following, as the band proceeded to air it live and in full at a series of unconventional self-promoted gigs and happenings.

HOLLIE COOK LONDON GIG

Hollie Cook  will be performing one of her final UK 2012 gigs at  London’s Cargo on the 27th of November 2012.

It’s been an incredibly busy but successful year for Hollie, her self-titled debut album was released on Mr Bongo in June 2011 to great critical acclaim and resulted in being on an array of ‘Top Albums of 2011’ lists including The Word, The Mirror and Rough Trade.

She played a mesmerising live set on Later With Jools Holland and supported The Stone Roses at Heaton Park this Summer.

Her self coined ‘tropical pop’ continues to seduce fans across the country. This year saw Prince Fatty rework her eponymous album to create Hollie Cook in dub.

PETER HOOK & THE LIGHT TOUR

Following their first full UK tour in late May/ early June of this year and a recent headline performance at The Hop Farm, Peter Hook And The Light take “Unknown Pleasures” on the road to a host of new venues across England and Scotland in late November and early December 2012. The Light are set to play the widely acclaimed album sequentially and in its entirety along with other classic and lesser known material from Warsaw and Joy Division’s repertoires.

As the final night of the tour sees a return to The Liquid Rooms, Edinburgh, where The Light previously performed “Unknown Pleasures” in April 2011, this gig will see the band perform Joy Division’s second album “Closer”.

Receiving great reviews and reactions on the early Summer dates including some five star reviews and hugely admiring comments, The Light recent completed performing the trilogy of Joy Division’s official album releases with two “Still” concerts in Manchester in May 2012 and have now come to play every single Joy Division track ever released.

Drawing on this in their lengthy, extensive sets, The Light have toured constantly since first performing “Unknown Pleasures back in May 2010 and have taken the show across the world to the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand and practically every European country, drawing crowds that encompass both original Joy Division fans and the younger generation influenced by the band’s material.

With the full performance of “Unknown Pleasures” at the centre of the show, The Light play the first album in track order replicating the album experience and atmosphere created by legendary producer, Martin Hannett. Hannett’s studio mastery along with the rawness of the bands first album material means that the reputation of the LP remains as powerful as ever, with fans and also the bands who are acknowledged to have taken on the template of Joy Division’s sound in the modern era.

“Unknown Pleasures”, considered one of the most stunning debut albums ever released, came to yield many landmark tracks, including “Disorder” “Insight”, “New Dawn Fades”, and “She’s Lost Control” but alongside the album,The Light also turn to Hooky’s early repertoire to perform many other Warsaw and Joy Division tracks, some of which have never been played live previously apart from within The Light’s live performances.

GOLDBLADE NEW ALBUM and DATES!

There have been hints at new Goldblade material for a few months now starting with the release of controversial video "We’re All In It Together" and during their recent slew of live shows where they have been playing new sounds to unsuspecting audiences across the UK.

Today, it comes with real pleasure to announce that these UK punk legends have signed to Southern Records to release their brand new album which will be unleashed early in 2013. This marks their first release since 2008’s Mutiny.

The album was recorded at the legendary Southern Studios, so it seemed natural that the label would be their new home. Goldblade front-man John Robb had this to say about the signing:

"At last we have a new album and a new home. There is something perfect about Goldblade being on Southern Records with it’s great catalogue of punk rock with an intelligence and a meaning. We bought all those Crass and Rudimentary Peni Records, as well as the On U Sound System and Fugazi and just about every band that understood the punk rock spirit and carried the flag for underground music in the decades after the punk rock big bang. It was great to record the album at Southern studios with its long history of brilliant sounding records from Crass to Jesus And Mary Chain to Shellac and be part of that noisy culture that is the real soundtrack to independent culture and the real alternative music."

More specific album details are still be revealed in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, there will be a clutch of dates before the year is out:
24th November – Fife punk festival
8th Dec – Birmingham Rebellion Christmas punk festival with Rancid and Cock Sparrer
10th Dec – London 100 Club with Vince Ray, The Fits
22nd Dec – Newport 200 Club

Full details can be found on the band’s website: http://www.goldblade.com/
