GO-KART MOZART

The album release will follow a UK tour in May of special screenings of Lawrence of Belgravia, Paul Kelly’s intimate portrait of Lawrence, which premiered at last October’s London Film Festival to much critical acclaim. Filmed over the last eight years, the film follows Lawrence as he tries to balance a precarious domestic lifestyle with running a band and recording his latest album, now due for release as On The Hot Dog Streets.

Each special screening will followed by a Q&A session with both Lawrence and the film’s director, Paul Kelly. See attached for dates.

As lead singer with Felt, Lawrence was responsible for some of the most precious music of the 1980s. On touchstone indie labels such as Cherry Red and Creation, the band released ten albums and ten singles – one for each year of the decade. Though few releases troubled the charts, Felt’s cult status was assured and a mission of sorts was accomplished. Lawrence went on to form Denim and Go-Kart Mozart, bands that revelled in referencing 1970s glam and novelty rock while slyly critiquing the contemporary pop scenes. There’s been an air of tragi-comedy about Lawrence’s career at times. Felt were bumped from the cover of the NME when editors favoured a blacked-out cover to illustrate a feature on youth suicide, while Denim’s infectious 1997 single Summer Smash was scratched from radio playlists when it was released in the week Princess Diana died.

SQUEEZE TOUR

Squeeze Pop Up Shop 2012 UK Winter Tour Paul Heaton Announced As Special Guest Following their incredibly popular 2010 ŒSpot The Difference Tour¹ British legends Squeeze return with an extensive tour of the UK this November and December! Former Housemartin and Beautiful South front man Paul Heaton has just been announced as a special guest on all dates. Heaton and his band will be performing a selection of old and new songs from his extensive back catalogue. It¹s been over 35 years since Squeeze burst onto the music scene and are still as vital as they¹ve ever been. As befits one of the UK¹s much-loved acts, there is no end of Squeeze fans currently wearing their influences firmly on their sleeve, whether it be Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Lily Allen or The Feeling. With their fingerprints keenly felt throughout the fabric of popular music, it is only right that these songs, with their evergreen and popular sound, continue to be played and enjoyed live. And so since 2007, the newly reformed Squeeze have been slowly finding time to play a series of gigs and festival dates, and this coming Winter they are about to embark on a 20+ show tour across the UK. Since founders Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook reformed the band with Squeeze veteran John Bentley and Tilbrook¹s Fluffers cohorts Stephen Large and Simon Hanson the band has become an instant favourite on the festival circuit with appearances at V, Oxegen, T in the Park and Latitude and this year take to the stage at the seminal US Festival Coachella. Squeeze¹s contribution to music has been noted in 2010 with the site of their first gig being awarded a prestigious PRS For Music Heritage Plaque, which has so far commemorated the debuts of Blur and Dire Straits. It joins an ever-increasing list of Squeeze accolades alongside their recent Ivor Novello for Outstanding Contribution to British Music and their Nordoff-Robbins Icon Award, as well as the Mojo Magazine Icon Award. Chris Difford¹s lyrics and Glenn Tilbrook¹s music have survived everything over the years, from the ever-changing musical landscape to their own internal reshuffles and even an acrimonious breakup - but Squeeze is here to stay, still going strong and still loving every moment. This new tour will remind fans just why they have left such an indelible impression on the UK¹s music scene. WILKO JOHNSON

Fascinating, funny, deeply personal and visually compelling, Looking Back At Me is a fascinating rock ‘n’ roll scrapbook and oral history, and genuine treasure trove, marking the first time Wilko has told his story, no holds barred. The book can be pre-ordered online from Cadiz Music here.

Within these colourful pages, the Canvey Island raised guitarist shares his recollections on everything from his Essex childhood and his Indian odyssey as a hippy, to the wild, turbulent days of Dr Feelgood and Ian Dury and The Blockheads, to his current band featuring Norman Watt-Roy (bass) and Dylan Howe (drums). Wilko also expands on his love for astronomy, art, literature, clouds, poetry, sci-fi, and Shakespeare; making him the ultimate Renaissance man of rock.

Amid the twists, turns and tangents, the autobiography features many previously unseen images of Wilko from throughout his life, as well as an array of ephemera and anecdotes from notable Wilko fans including Robert Plant, Alison Moyet, JJ Burnel, Keith Levene, Gavin Martin and Whispering Bob Harris. The book also features a foreword by Mick Farren.

Wilko will appear at an exclusive book signing at Rough Trade East at 6pm on Wednesday May 30th. The signing will be following by a Q&A and a half hour set featuring Wilko and his band. Rough Trade East is located at Dray Walk, Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL.

Read the official press release and download the autobiography artwork here – www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/wilkojohnson/autobiography.htm.

Wilko is currently in the middle of a UK tour that continues at the Huddersfield Lawrence Batley Theatre tonight. Click here for the April UK tour dates – http://bit.ly/us9EIT.

PLUS THE BIG CHEESE STAGE – DETAILS SOON.

VIVE LE ROCK FRIENDLY HEADLINERS INCLUDE-

TULISA / THE STRAITS / CHER LLOYD GARY NUMAN / NOUVELLE VAGUE
added to the GuilFest 2012 Line Up!

Joining the already announced Olly Murs, Bryan Ferry, Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra feat. Roland Gift, Tim Minchin, Jimmy Cliff, and Chic feat. Nile Rodgers.

Ex N-Dubz superstar, TULISA is confirmed to perform on the Main Stage on Saturday 14th July. Tulisa achieved massive success as a member of N-Dubz, without question one of the most culturally significant groups in contemporary British pop music. Their albums “Uncle B,” “Against All Odds” and “Love.Live.Life” have to-date sold over 1 million copies in the UK. With over 100 million views on YouTube, a No.1 bestselling book and four MOBO Award wins, Tulisa and N-Dubz are among the most powerful names in music.
Since being announced as an X Factor judge in 2011, Tulisa’s career has gone supernova. She has over 1.7 million followers on Twitter and has become a national obsession, gracing the pages of tabloids daily and the cover of magazines on a weekly basis. After winning over the hearts of the British public on The X Factor in 2011 with her warmth and honesty on the panel, Tulisa went on to win the show with band ‘Little Mix’, the first girl group ever to reach the final.

No stranger to GuilFest, Tulisa has appeared twice before with N-Dubz – but this year will be her debut appearance as a solo artist. Festival organiser Tony Scott is delighted: “It’s great to have Tulisa back again, she’s a real hit with the crowds at GuilFest!”

Formed by original members of Dire Straits, Alan Clark and Chris White, THE STRAITS will support Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on the Main Stage on Friday 13th July. The band will be performing Dire Straits greatest hits and are the only way to authentically hear the bands’ much loved catalogue of great songs live. Dire Straits were undoubtedly one of the world’s most successful groups, with album sales of over 120 million, numerous awards including three Brit Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards; and were responsible for such incredibly popular classics such as “Sultans of Swing”, “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life”, “So Far Away”, and 30 million selling album title track “Brothers In Arms”. Get down to GuilFest to hear these great tracks played live by some of the original musicians on Friday 13th July.

X Factor sensation CHER LLOYD will appear on the Main Stage on the afternoon of Saturday 14th July. Easily one of the most talked about people of the show, Cher is a name on the lips of music lovers throughout the country. To date, her version of “Swag” has had over 50 million views on Youtube, and with over 600,000 followers on Twitter, around 100 million views on Youtube, the cover of RWD magazine and features in fashion bible Wonderland, Cher is one of the most recognisable new faces in the public eye. Despite only being 18, she has already had considerable success in the music industry. Her first single, “Swagger Jagger” hit the Number 1 spot in the UK singles chart, and her debut album Sticks and Stones reached Number 4 in the UK albums chart.

Electronic music pioneer GARY NUMAN is confirmed to headline The Second Stage on Saturday 14th July. Most famous for his number 1 singles “Cars” and “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”, as well as his 3 number 1 albums “Replicas”, “The Pleasure Principle”, and “Telekon”, as well as another 31 top 50 UK singles, Gary is known as one of the most influential electronic music artists of all time, cited by artists as diverse as Beck, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Queens of The Stone Age, Wu Tang Clan and Magnetic Man.

Ground breaking French project NOUVELLE VAGUE will be supporting Gary Numan on The Second Stage on Saturday 14th July. The brainchild of producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, Nouvelle Vague have gone from strength to strength since the unanticipated worldwide success of their eponymous debut album (Over 200,000 copies!). The band have found themselves playing their unique twists of post punk hits and more to crowds all over the globe and have received universal critical acclaim wherever they go. Their covers of hits such as XTC’s “Making Plans for Nigel”, The Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks”, and New Order’s “Blue Monday” have cemented their appeal amongst music lovers everywhere and organisers are delighted welcome them back to GuilFest for the first time since 2009.

There are a huge number of acts still to be announced for the already fantastic lineup at this year’s festival. Make sure you keep an eye out for announcements over the coming weeks as GuilFest 2012 takes shape. Don’t forget that as well as music there is a wealth of other entertainment at the festival, including great theatre, comedy, the amazing KidZone and many other attractions designed to appeal to the entire family. Right next door to the site there is even Guildford Lido, a 50m outdoor swimming pool with showers, and Spectrum Leisure centre – with a wealth of indoor activities including swimming, ice skating and ten pin bowling!

The Beat was formed in 1978 by Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar) and Andy Cox (guitar). Band members Ranking Roger (vocals), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), and Lionel Augustus Martin a/k/a Saxa (saxophone), would then each find their way to the lineup via their own unique path. ³People just appeared as required. It had a kind of kismet feel,² says Wakeling. <https://www.yousendit.com/download/M3BsSmI4Q1AwVWxEZU1UQw> The Complete Beat artwork Click for Hi-Res <https://www.yousendit.com/download/M3BsSmI4Q1BVVGs4RmNUQw> Keep The Beat artwork Click for Hi-Res The Beat got their start in Birmingham amidst a burgeoning punk scene, developing a new sound at the same time that The Specials, and Jerry Dammers¹ Chrysalis-backed subsidiary, 2 Tone, rose to fame. After releasing their version of ³Tears of a Clown,² the band broke straight into the Top 10. Within 6 months of playing their first gig, The Beat was on top of the charts and performing the first of many performances on Top Of The Pops. The Beat released I Just Can¹t Stop It in 1980, featuring the singles ³Hands Off . . . She¹s Mine,² ³Mirror In The Bathroom,² ³Too Nice To Talk To,² and ³Best Friend,² which was accompanied by their rebuttal of Thatcherism, ³Stand Down Margaret.² Their next release, Wha¹ppen?, expanded their sound with calypso and also shades of Mediterranean rhythms, samba and world beat ‹ as well as a deeper exploration of reggae, too, beyond frenetic ska. By the time Special Beat Service was released in 1982, the band¹s popularity had grown significantly in the U.S., where they called themselves The English Beat to avoid confusion with Paul Collins¹ group. Special Beat Service featured the songs ³Jeannette,² the astute ³I Confess,² and ³Save It For Later,² which would go on to be covered by Pete Townshend and Pearl Jam. The latter¹s adventures with Miles Copeland¹s IRS Records resulted in him relocating to America. That prefaced the slightly unusual but largely amicable situation whereby various reformations of The Beat have been spearheaded by Ranking Roger in Britain and Wakeling in America. Ogg writes in The Complete Beat essay, ³while The Beat¹s original lineup played together for four short years, their brief but memorable existence yielded three increasingly experimental albums that continue to reward repeat visits, five of the finest hit singles of the era and, often forgotten in the ledgers of great bands, hundreds of intoxicating live shows. They were a core part of the still-influential 2 Tone movement, but beyond that, they were intrinsically a wonderfully gifted songwriting unit, drawing on a serendipitously assembled cast of contributors who found themselves able, through either skill or simple instinct, to fluently combine reggae and pop traditions without compromising either. This box set incorporates practically their entire recorded output, and the absolute dearth of chaff is a small and lovely miracle.² The English Beat are currently on tour and appeared at The 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on April 13th, performing their hits ³Save It For Later,² ³Mirror In The Bathroom,² ³Tears Of A Clown² and ³Tenderness.² For more information on tour dates, please visit http://www.myspace.com/officialbeatspace Shout! SEX PISTOLS

Nearly 35 years to the day since its original release, Universal Music confirmed today that they will re-release the Sex Pistols alternative national anthem – ‘God Save The Queen’ on May 28th. It will be exactly 35 years and a day after it was first released, in a barrage of controversy the likes of which the UK had rarely seen. No one had ever dared question the Monarchy so publicly; and it wasn’t without its repercussions. Members of the band were attacked in the streets; and Government Members of Parliament even called for the Pistols to be hung at Traitors’ Gate!

Originally released on May 27th 1977, during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, ‘God Save The Queen’ made its mark in history. The BBC amongst others refused to play it and although it technically out-sold the Number 1 record of the week (The First Cut is the Deepest by Rod Stewart) ‘GSTQ’ peaked at Number 2 in the singles charts. The powers-that-be refused to acknowledge it but the Sex Pistols were Number 1.

On the Jubilee holiday itself, June 7th 1977, the Sex Pistols arranged their own Jubilee tribute with a boat trip along the River Thames in full view of the Houses of Parliament. After playing a handful of songs Police boarded the boat and arrested several people; including the band’s then manager Malcolm McLaren.

Their now legendary album ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ will also be re-issued in September of this year as an expanded and repacked release to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of its release. More details on the reissue will follow shortly.

The band have also announced that a limited edition 7” picture disc of their first ever single ‘Anarchy In The UK’ will be released on April 21st for Record Store Day.

GALLON DRUNK

Gallon Drunk’s other two core cohorts – multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Terry Edwards on bass, saxophone and percussion and the mighty Ian White on drums and percussion – have together with Johnston distilled their intuitive and utterly inimitable musical vision into a collection of impassioned songs, imbued with rage, menace and frenzied abandonment, linking them as kindred spirits to the likes of The Gun Club, The Stooges, and Link Wray. “It’s quite an angry record,” sums up Johnston.

Opening with the exhilaratingly sleazy, deranged rock ‘n’ roll of “You Made Me” (the first 7” inch single to be pulled off the album), The Road Gets Darker From Here immediately and irresistibly plunges you into its own dark and crazy underworld. The insistent slide guitar-driven “1,000 Years” sets the stage for an eruption of total guitar fury with “Hanging On”, that is then followed by the ominous melancholia of “Stuck In My Head”, to which guest singer Marion Andrau (of the London-based French group Underground Railroad) contributes her haunting vocal in a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood-style duet with Johnston. Next in line is “Killing Time”: classic unfettered Gallon Drunk with all the do-or-die abandon that implies. Hurtling inexorably to the finish line, the fever dream boogie of “The Big Breakdown” blusters mightily into the wayward big band swagger of “I Just Can’t Help But Stare”, before the final track, an enigmatic psychodrama entitled “The Perfect Dancer” envelopes the listener in a whirlwind of hallucinatory guitars, Hammond organ and hypnotic voodoo drums, ending the album in a haunting finale.

Having over the years inspired countless bands — from early PJ Harvey to The Jim Jones Revue — to dig into the raw vitality of primal blues and garage rock and roll, Gallon Drunk have reemerged with an album that embodies the quintessence of all they are and always have been about. Make no mistake: Gallon Drunk are most definitely back!

The Road Gets Darker From Here track listing:

You Made Me
Hanging On
A Thousand Years
Stuck In My Head

Killing Time
The Big Breakdown
I Just Can’t Help But Stare
The Perfect Dancer

GIANT GIANT SAND

Premiered on Rolling Stone’s website on Friday, we’re pleased to give you a little taster of what to expect from Giant Giant Sand’s new album Tucson which is due out on Fire Records in June. "Forever and a Day" is an early scene in this ‘country-rock opera’ of sorts and sees Howe Gelb in peak song-writing condition. Howe will be over in London playing a solo show on 31 May (postponed from Tuesday 3 April) and will be available for interviews on that day when he is here.

Thinking that Giant Sand could never get any more giant, Howe Gelb has done just that by regrouping, expanding and magnifying his vision with the newest version of Giant Sand, calling it (appropriately enough) GIANT GIANT SAND. As a sort of homage, he’s named the album "Tucson" after the town he’s called home for forty years. This self-described country rock opera, by one of music’s leading risk-takers, is set to be released on June 11th, 2012 on Fire Records.

Taking place in the town of Tucson, the story revolves around a "semi grizzled man with overt boyish naïveté" who sets off to escape the trappings of hometown life and embarks on a life-changing road trip; eschewing all his worldly goods and leaving behind what he has loved, encountering jail at the Mexican border, finding new old love at a train station saloon, all while ‘the end of the world’ provides the landscape game changer. The album is a dusty work of art, conjuring images of the all knowing desert and a confused river inside the cacti-strewn soundscape.

The inspiration for assembling these collaborators (or cast if you will) for an album was the idea of a country rock opera, a vision that has followed Howe for decades.

In GIANT GIANT SAND you will recognize the members all hailing from Denmark who have been a part of Giant Sand for the last 10 years (Thøger T. Lund, Peter Dombernowski, Anders Pederesen and Nikolaj Heyman) plus now including a string section, as well as the stunning pedal steel player Maggie Bjorklund.

In addition, you’ll be introduced to the new musicians from Howe Gelb’s native Tucson making their Giant Sand debuts along with long time collaborator Lonna Kelley lending her smoldering warble from Phoenix.

The Tucson GIANT GIANT SAND lineup includes Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan and Jon Villa who bring their Mex-Amer-i-can plunk to the album with a permeating cumbia style of playing, drawing on South American traditional music. Joining them all is a string section from Aarhus, Denmark introduced to the band by Señor Lopez (where coincidentally the rest of Giant Sand are from) including violinists Asger Christensen amd Iris Jakobsen, who, ironically, was born in Tucson.

"No man could’ve planned this mother better when fate is the founding father."
                                                                 – obscure country rock opera expression

‘Tucson’ will be available on CD / 2XLP / Digital Download
