THE SLITS AT FOPP

Members of The Slits and author Zoe Street meet fans at FOPP Covent Garden

WHAT: Signing session

WHERE: FOPP London, Earlham Street, Covent Garden

WHEN: Monday 13th July 2009 at 6.00 pm

Fans of the hugely influential punk band, The Slits, get the chance to meet two members of the band in person when they visit FOPP’s Earlham Street store in London’s Covent Garden to sign copies of the new book, ‘Typical Girls: The Story Of The Slits’, on Monday 13th July 2009.

Author Zoe Street, with Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt from the band, will be at the store from 6.00 pm, to meet fans and sign copies of the new book which is officially released through Omnibus on 9th July 2009.

Wild, defiant and startlingly inventive, The Slits were ahead of their time. Although they created some unique hybrids – dub reggae and pop-punk, African rhythms, funk and free jazz – they were dismissed as being unable to play. In the book, Author Zoe Street Howe speaks to The Slits themselves, to former manager Don Letts, mentor and PIL guitarist Keith Levene and many other friends and colleagues to discover exactly how The Slits phenomenon came about and to celebrate the legacy of a seminal band long overdue its rightful acclaim.

Spector in ‘sensitive needs’ area of prison

Reuters
SPECIAL NEEDS: Phil Spector has been assigned to a ‘sensitive needs facility’ in California’s largest state prison.

Music legend Phil Spector has been assigned to a "sensitive needs facility" in California’s largest state prison to serve his sentence for murder.

Spector was taken to the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran, where 6919 other inmates are housed.

And even behind bars, the man credited with inventing the Wall of Sound will be allowed to create music.

Spector will be permitted to have musical instruments in his cell, and inmates in his unit often sing and play music together, a spokesman said.

The 69-year-old Spector is serving 19 years to life for the fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson at his castle-like home in Alhambra in 2003.

Of course, Spector also produced the Ramones.

MICHAEL JACKSON DEAD

TMZ: Michael Jackson Dead At Age 50

Pop Star Reportedly Suffered Cardiac Arrest, Was Rushed To UCLA Medical Center

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―

King of Pop Michael Jackson died Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital where he was rushed around 1 p.m. PT by paramedics, according to celebrity Web site

TMZ

.

Jackson had reportedly suffered cardiac arrest.

Capt. Steve Ruda told the

Los Angeles Times

earlier Thursday that paramedics responded to a call at Jackson’s home around 12:26 p.m. Ruda said Jackson was not breathing when they arrived.

Jackson had announced months ago that he would be doing a comeback tour, but his representatives announced in May that the the star would postpone several of his London shows scheduled for this summer.

Jackson, who has sold more than 750 million albums and won 13 Grammys, hasn’t undertaken a a major tour since 1997 or released an album of new material since 2001.

The 50-year-old singer has been seen in public infrequently since he was acquitted of child molestation in California in 2005. He has struggled to pay his debts, and was forced last year to give up the deed to Neverland, his 2,500-acre ranch and miniature amusement park in California.

On May 20, Jackson’s representatives announced several postponments to his London comeback shows scheduled for this summer. The opening night at the 02 Arena had been set for July 8 but was be moved back to July 13, promoters said. In addition, other shows scheduled for July were moved to 2010.

SEED-SKY SAXON DEAD

Sky Saxon, lead singer and bassist of ’60s garage rockers the Seeds, died Thursday in an Austin, Texas hospital. He had been in the ICU since Monday suffering from an undisclosed illness — doctors suspected an internal organ infection — until his wife, Sabrina, announced his passing via Facebook.

Influenced heavily by the Rolling Stones, Saxon — born Richard Marsh — founded the Seeds in 1965 in California. The next year, the psychedelic rockers released two albums, ‘The Seeds’ and ‘A Web of Sound,’ and had hits with ‘Can’t Seem to Make You Mine’ and ‘Pushin’ Too Hard,’ their most successful song. In 1967, the band released two more albums: ‘Future,’ a psychedelic rock album, and ‘A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues,’ which was credited to the Sky Saxon Blues Band and featured liner notes by the legendary Muddy Waters.

After some lineup changes and a few more commercially unsuccessful albums, Saxon dissolved the band in the early ’70s. He joined a California commune, the Source Family, adopted the name Sunlight and occasionally performed with their trippy house band, the Ya Ho Wa 13. In 1989, Saxon reformed the Seeds to tour with other ’60s acts like Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Arthur Lee and Love. They toured again in 2003, and Saxon kept busy musically, releasing an album last year, and recording with the Smashing Pumpkins. Though he fell ill last Thursday, Saxon still managed to play a short gig on Saturday night at Austin rock club Antone’s.

Earlier today, Sabrina Sherry Smith Saxon wrote on her Facebook page, "Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I’m so sorry I couldn’t keep him here with us. More later. I’m sorry." No other announcements have been made.

HATEBREED ALBUM

Metal-hardcore juggernauts HATEBREED have re-entered the studio to begin work on their long-awaited new studio album which is slated for a late Autumn 2009 release.

HATEBREED’s follow-up to 2006’s ‘Supremacy’ will be released by Roadrunner Records in all territories, ex-North America.  The new album, simply titled ‘Hatebreed,’ is shaping up to be one of the band’s most ferocious albums yet.

Frontman Jamey Jasta comments, "I can’t wait to work with Roadrunner International and E1 Music (in North America) on this release.  We’re so pumped to give them both our new studio album!"

The new album will be once again produced by Zeuss and will feature the return of original guitar player, Wayne Lozinak (who recently replaced departed guitarist Sean Martin,) alongside core members Chris Beattie (bass), Matt Byrne (drums), Frank “3 Gun” Novinec (guitar) and Jamey Jasta (vocals).

Jasta continues, “The record is mean as hell!  Fans of American metal and East Coast hardcore will be very pleased, and maybe even somewhat surprised."

The band is currently taking a breather from the studio and touring Europe, then South America for a series of high-profile festival appearances and headline shows – which included the UK’s Download Festival last weekend – before returning to the US to headline their own ‘DECIMATION OF THE NATION’ tour which begins late July and runs through September.

GEORGE THOROGOODS BACK!

Vive Le Punk always had a soft spot for George Thorogood-well now hes back with a new album. Read on…

GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS UNLEASH ‘THE DIRTY DOZEN,’ A NEW ALBUM PAIRING NEW STUDIO RECORDINGS WITH FAN FAVORITES & RARITIES, ON JULY 27

Hollywood, California – June 1, 2009 – George Thorogood & The Destroyers have returned to Capitol/EMI for the July 28 release of The Dirty Dozen, a scorching new blues-rock album pairing six new studio recordings with six classic fan favorites, including three popular tracks that were previously out-of-print in the U.S.

The Dirty Dozen features Thorogood’s signature blues-rock vocals and guitar playing on 12 songs, many of which were written by a who’s-who of American blues legends, including Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, “Sleepy” John Estes, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, and Willie Dixon.

Launching the new recordings on Side One of The Dirty Dozen is Willie Dixon’s swaggering “Tail Dragger,” vividly illustrated by Thorogood’s vocals and guitar, followed by his new take on John Hammond’s version of "Sleepy" John Estes’ “Drop Down Mama,” a rocking jam that’s driven by Thorogood’s muscular guitar playing.  Also on Side One are Thorogood’s new recordings of Muddy Waters’ “Born Lover,” Bo Diddley’s “Let Me Pass,” “Twenty Dollar Gig,” by Mickey Bones, and The Holmes Brothers’ “Run Myself Out Of Town.”

Side Two’s fan favorites open with Thorogood’s previously out-of-print guitar and sax-propelled take on Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Howlin’ For My Baby,” followed by Howlin’ Wolf’s “Highway 49,” a bona fide juke joint roof-raiser loaded with slide-laden guitar riffs. Side Two also features two other previously out-of-print tracks: Chuck Berry’s “Hello Little Girl” and country standard “Six Days On The Road.”  “Treat Her Right” and “Blue Highway” are also included.

For more than 30 years, George Thorogood & The Destroyers have been a powerful force in blues rock music.  Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1977, they have toured and performed with many of blues’ most legendary artists, including Hound Dog Taylor, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, Albert Collins, Johnny Johnson, John Hammond, Elvin Bishop, Eddie Shaw and Buddy Guy.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers released their self-titled debut album in 1977 and quickly established themselves as radio favorites and as a touring machine. They signed with EMI for their major label debut, 1982’s, Bad To The Bone, and they recorded seven studio albums during their tenure with the label, departing after 1997’s Rockin’ My Life Away. Described as “the world’s greatest bar band,” the group has had tremendous success with Thorogood’s original compositions like “You Talk Too Much,” “I Drink Alone” and of course “Bad To The Bone;” he’s also had hits with covers of iconic blues-rock songs like “Who Do You Love” (Bo Diddley), “Move It On Over” (Hank Williams) and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” (John Lee Hooker).  2004’s Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock was Billboard’s #1 Blues Album in 2004 and 2005, and the band’s 12th studio album, 2006’s The Hard Stuff, hit #2 on Billboard’s Blues chart.

“It feels like a homecoming for me, to be back with Capitol/EMI for The Dirty Dozen,” says Thorogood.  “This album is also a homecoming of sorts for us – it’s a real rocker, full of songs we’ve always loved playing, including some that our fans have told us they like a lot but haven’t been available for a while”.

BANNED IN LONDON

Back from the Crypt… or possibly jobs in accountancy (true!)

The estimable Bradders has another gig lined up in a series of events at the 12 Bar in London in which some of the ’77 originals are reunited. ViveLePunk is particularly excited about catching Torquay’s Das Schnitz in action for the first time in 29 years – they were the band whose lone single became a unique rarity after they packaged it in custom sleeves made out of a bunch of disco and assorted picture sleeve over-runs they bought from a nearby market …

The Banned + Das Schnitz + Schoolgirl Bitch (possibly) + London PX
12 Bar Saturday 25th July.

GODFATHERS ACTION

A Message from the Godfathers…

It is my absolute pleasure to 100% confirm that The Godfathers (that’s Peter Coyne, Chris Coyne, Mike Gibson, George Mazur & Del Bartle to you) are currently all writing new material for a brand new Godfathers album to be released SOMETIME in 2010. There have indeed been many distractions along the way since we reformed last year, but right now I’m tingling with excitement at the prospect of our creative sparks rubbing together and what we are going to come up with next!! I’d like to see us write at least 20-25 great numbers first & then select the absolute best 12-14 for single/album release next year. What `direction’ or `shape’ or `form’ this new material will eventually take is down to us as individuals & as a group – but I’d personally want to hear plenty of freaky rock & roll music, ultra-melodic stuff that gets stuck in your brain & won’t let go, something shockingly different to the majority of crap that masquerades as modern music these days…you know, The Godfathers – but NOW!

As far as I’m concerned we’ve already made a great start to our song-writing with a number of absolute crackers under our belts already (a couple of work-in-progress titles to share with you here, `Back Into The Future’ & `Primitive Man’) but of course at this very early stage of our endeavours it’s hard to tell whether these may or may not appear on any eventual release – nothing’s set in stone. That’s just the tip of the iceberg coming your way, but all of us in the band have definitely got a lot of serious work to do on the composing/writing front this summer/autumn. Sure we love performing fantastic songs like `I Want Everything’, `Birth School Work Death’ & `Walking Talking Johnny Cash Blues’, but we want to be able to add those classic numbers & complement them with shit-hot new material as & when we see fit. We’re The Godfathers, that’s our right & I’m really looking forward to the adventure, the challenge & the tremendous buzz of it all.

Wish us well & trust in our taste!

Peter Coyne/The Godfathers

PS Don’t forget The Godfathers are onstage at The Garage on Friday 24th July bang on at 8:40pm as there is a strict 10:00pm curfew – so come early!! See you all there at a red-hot & sticky Garage – we’ll be playing a couple of classics we haven’t tried previously!!

LIVING END ALARM!

– THE LIVING END –

Aussie punk-rock legends return with single number two “Raise The Alarm” & confirm Reading / Leeds Festival

With single one “White Noise” (a song nominated for a prestigious APRA Music Award for Australian song of the year) still garnering a lot of attention, The Living End return to turn up the heat with single two in the form of the anthemic “Raise The Alarm”.

Taken from the bands fifth studio offering – an album critics described as a manifesto for change; “Rocky punky goodness with sing-able choruses. Great band.” (Guitarist), “Captivating and energetic” (Big Cheese)

Raise The Alarm is a boisterous rock monster and a prime example of a band fully embracing their now tougher sound.

It’s a song that, in Cheney’s own words, looks at the ruthless contradictions of the lives we live; “It’s a harsh reality but it’s the Ying and the Yang that makes life what it is. If everything and everyone was equal then I think it safe to say the world would be in even more of a mess.” (Chris Cheney) and has quickly become a live favourite with fans old and new alike.

The Living End have recently been confirmed to play the main stage at this years Reading & Leeds Festivals alongside the stellar line up of Radiohead, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend and Brand New.

Whilst gracing these shores the band also play Beautiful Days Festival and Lowlands as well a couple of smaller shows including a date supporting one of the countries favourites Enter Shikari.

21-Aug PUKKELPOP FESTIVAL
22-Aug LOWLANDS FESTIVAL
23-Aug DEVON BEAUTIFUL DAYS
25-Aug SWANSEA SIN CITY
27-Aug EDINBURGH PICTURE HOUSE w/ Enter Shikari
29-Aug LEEDS FESTIVAL
